It was pandemonium in Ikorodu on Friday night as commercial motorcyclists popularly known as Okada riders clashed with police officers in a raid to impound commercial motorcycles found on the highways.
It was gathered that hoodlums joined in the attack and some of them were arrested.
The raid was said to have taken place Friday night with 14 motorcycles impounded and 50 people arrested.
In a tweet, the image maker of the Police, Benjamin Hundeyin said that the raid was off numerous reports they received concerning the activities of the Okada riders on the Ikorodu highways.
The tweet reads, “We got numerous reports that motorcyclists operate at night. We reviewed strategy and stormed Ikorodu last night (existing ban on all highways). The riders and hoodlums attacked the Police. We activated our standby backup. 50 arrested, 14 motorcycles impounded. Crushing next…”
Our correspondent spoke to an Okada rider who stated that since Ikorodu is not among the areas Lagos State banned Okadas, he is confused as to why the police came after them.
“Ikorodu is not among the areas Lagos State banned. But they will keep disturbing us time and again. Most of us have to be careful when passing the road to ensure that they are not in the hiding waiting for us to pass, so they could impound our bikes.”
It will be recalled that Ikorodu was not among the Local Government and LCDAs Lagos State banned in the latest ban, but according to the tweet of the spokesperson, he indicated that the raid was one bordering on all highways.
