It was a disappointing day for Ikorodu City as they suffered a 2-1 loss to Ekiti United at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in matchday five of the Nigeria National League (NNL) 22/2023 season, marking their third consecutive defeat in the league.
The game got off to a rocky start for Ikorodu City as the hosts, Ekiti United, scored an early goal just two minutes into the match. A poorly directed low cross from Olatunde Sunday took a wicked bounce in front of goalkeeper Victor Ogbonna, resulting in the ball finding the back of the net.
However, Ikorodu City quickly fought back and managed to draw level before the end of the first half. Sabastian Godwin and Salami Farouk, who were making their first appearances of the season, made an immediate impact by commanding their positions on the field. Farouk even set up Ayomide Cole for his first-ever goal in the NNL, and Ikorodu City’s first goal for the club in the league, to bring the score level going into the break.
The second half was fiercely contested, with both teams struggling to gain the upper hand. Despite numerous changes from both sides, it was Ekiti United who managed to restore their lead. A poorly defended set piece allowed Pius Chikodi to direct the ball into the bottom corner from a distance, securing the victory for the home team.
This loss marked the third meeting between Ikorodu City and Ekiti United, with Ekiti United emerging victorious in both previous encounters, including the only fixture played in Lagos. Ikorodu City now looks to regroup as they shift their attention to the Lagos State FA Cup final against Smart City Feeders on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. They will also be participating in the Federation Cup for the first time ever later in the same week.
Despite the recent setbacks in the league, Ikorodu City remains determined to bounce back and continue their pursuit of success in Nigerian football. Fans and supporters eagerly await the next meeting between Ikorodu City and Ekiti United in the second half of the league, hoping for a different outcome and a chance at redemption for their beloved team.
